What we do:
At Perlego, there are over 120 of us working hard to make education accessible to all. We believe access to good quality affordable learning unlocks potential. Knowledge should be more accessible, not locked behind sky-high price tags.
Last year, we expanded our library to make over 1 million books affordable for learners, earned a 100% Gold ASPIRE rating for accessibility and reached over 15 million people. The next stage of Perlego is twofold: 1) expand our support to students and publishers globally, and 2) build a product that goes beyond the book, a platform that helps students study smarter and educators teach more effectively.
What we're looking for:
A Lead Data Engineer who is self-driven, hands-on, and proactive in solving problems. With a focus on teamwork and the ability to provide technical guidance to others.
Someone who takes pride in building robust solutions, strives for automation, and is using tools aligned with infrastructure-as-code methodology. But at the same time is centred on delivering business value and is able to balance best practice approaches with business needs.
How we collaborate:
Our organisational structure revolves around cross-functional squads. The Data team sits centrally in this structure and forms part of the enabler tribe. The team is split into 3 domain areas; data engineering, data analytics and business intelligence. Together we support the goals of other squads by providing tooling, developing data products and providing data expertise.
What you’ll do:
We’re looking to optimise our data platform, increase observability and governance and to consider options for reducing our platform cost. We’re regularly expanding the datasets we ingest and need to consider speed of delivery as well as maintainability.
The primary use of our data is reporting, but we are beginning to develop some data products and would like to create a capability for supporting this in the future.
Your role will encompass managing the existing data infrastructure, leading on new infrastructure choices, monitoring performance and cost, and collaborating with third-party service providers. Additionally, you will support and guide two mid-level data engineers.
What success looks like for this role in 12 months
In 3 months you will be up to speed on our architecture, will have conducted a cost optimisation review of our platform and be in the process of implementing some of the recommendations
In 6 months you will have worked together with our existing team to establish robust alerting and data observability
This role aligns perfectly with your skill set if you possess:
Considerable experience in a Data Engineering role
Exceptional collaboration and communication skills
Previous experience mentoring other Data Engineers
Hands-on experience creating robust ETL pipelines, using big data tools
Experience ingesting data from external sources
Experience working with DataBricks
In-depth knowledge of AWS components, e.g. S3, CloudFormation, SageMaker
Strong focus on quality control and testing
Advanced knowledge of Python & Spark
Willingness to learn new tools & technologie
It’s a plus if you have:
Previously worked in a start-up/scale-up environment
Experience with data observability & monitoring tools such as Soda and Datadog
Experience with DBT
Experience in managing ML deployment
Exposure to Business Intelligence tools such as Tableau, Looker, or Mode Analytics
The range available for this role is £85,000-£90,000
