We are looking for a Senior Machine Learning Engineer to join our team.
Where in Wellcome will I be working?
You will be working for the Wellcome Collection which is a free museum and library that aims to challenge how we all think and feel about health. Through exhibitions, collections, live programming, digital, broadcast and publishing, we create opportunities for people to think deeply about the links between science, medicine, life, and art.
You will join an agile interdisciplinary team of machine learning engineers, data scientists, analysts, software and data engineers, visualisation specialists, product managers, qualitative researchers, and designers. We all learn from each other and work together in supporting Wellcome's mission to address worldwide health challenges.
What will I be doing?
You will have the opportunity to work on and lead specific machine learning projects across both the Wellcome Collection and the wider Wellcome Trust. With a focus on developing tools that enable the Wellcome Collection to manage and make accessible its extensive digital collection. With particular emphasis on working with open-source software to develop natural language processing and computer vision to create search algorithms and tools.
As a insert Senior Machine Learning Engineer you will :
  • Support and enable research into Wellcome Collection by championing the use of machine learning techniques across our text and image collections.
  • Take the lead on technical research and the development of machine learning solutions, including leading other machine learning engineers where appropriate.
  • Present complex analysis or solutions to both internal and external non-technical audiences in an understandable manner.
  • Mentor and support the development of data science and machine learning related skills in more junior or less technical colleagues.
  • Stay up to date with the latest advances in data science and machine learning research, ensuring Wellcome is taking full advantage of meaningful technological advances
  • Contribute to a diverse and inclusive culture across the organisation, collaborating across departments.

We are looking for an experienced senior machine learning engineer who has a passion for our mission in reducing global health inequalities to join out team with a focus on The Wellcome Collection's image archive.
To be successful in this role you will have:
  • Proven experience using advanced statistical techniques, machine learning, modern natural language processing and computer vision techniques to deliver impactfull solutions.
  • Strong knowledge of SQL and Python, including core machine learning libraries such as: PyTorch, Torchvision, Hugging Face and Scikit-Learn.
  • Knowledge of software development good practices and collaboration tools, including git-based version control, python package management and code reviews.
  • Experience cleaning, exploring, and visualising data using packages such as NumPy, Pandas, Matplotlib, Seaborn, Bokeh or Plotly.
  • Experience working with Postgres or other SQL databases and unstructured data stores. Any experience working with Neo4j graph databases is a bonus.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex machine learning algorithms and statistical methods to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Experience working with cloud environments and tools such as Amazon AWS S3, EC2, etc is a bonus.

Our Hybrid Way of Working
We understand that our colleagues have commitments and personal interests outside of work and we strive to build a flexible working environment, in which people can perform at their best. We are currently working 2 days per week (Tuesdays and Wednesdays) from our Euston Road offices (as part of our hybrid Ways of Working) with the remaining 3 days working either remotely or in the office.
From 1st September 2024 we will move to 3 days in the office (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday) with the remaining 2 days working either remotely or in the office.
