About Franchise Data Engineering

Data plays a critical role in every facet of the Goldman Sachs business. The Data Engineering group is at the core of that offering, focusing on providing the platform, processes, and governance, for enabling the availability of clean, organized, and impactful data to scale, streamline, and empower our core businesses.

Franchise Data Engineering is a team within the public side of Global Banking & Markets (GBM) division responsible for building data pipelines and curating data catering specifically for Sales and Trading management. GBM Public primarily serves institutional clients. These clients can include Asset Managers, Corporates, Sovereigns, Pensions, Endowments, and Insurance companies, which typically engage in the buying and selling of financial products. We build and enhance systems and processes that support over 2,000 Salespeople covering more than 12,000 different Clients across all business lines GBM Public do business with around the world.

Our engineers collaborate closely with businesses to ensure their data needs are met, and we react quickly to new demands by rapidly evolving our software solutions.

As a Full-stack Software Engineer on the Franchise Data Engineering team, you will be responsible for helping to build and improve the platform, systems & applications used for processing Gross Credits (GCs) - an internal Goldman Sachs metric used across businesses in the public side of GBM to: (i) evaluate client trends and the book of business across desks, (ii) benchmark client activities, and (iii) as one of many inputs in performance evaluation.
We tackle some of the most complex engineering problems across distributed software development, optimizing data access and delivery, using a variety of open-source, commercial, big data and proprietary technologies.

Basic Qualifications/Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Engineering, Computer Science or related disciplines
  • 2-4 years of software industry experience with strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Hands on experience in one of the mainstream programming languages (Java, C++, python etc. and full Stack development) using object-oriented design techniques and best practices
  • Good RDBMS experience (Sybase or DB2 preferred - able to write SQL and analyze complex queries with multi-table joins and aggregate functions)
  • Hands-on experience working with Linux and basic scripting (Bash) is a must.
  • Strong work ethics, a sense of ownership and urgency
  • Strong team player, required to work extensively with other teams both locally and globally Excellent communications skills and the ability to work with subject matter experts to extract critical business concepts

Preferred Qualifications

  • Data engineering projects experience.
  • Exposure to cloud databases.
  • Exposure to cloud infrastructure (AWS, Azure, or GCP) and infrastructure as code (Terraform, CloudFormation, or ARM templates). Experience with programming for extract transform load (ETL) operations and data analysis.
