Our team

As a part of Modelling and Decision Sciences (MDSci), you will develop technologies to enhance McLaren's analytics capability and deliver solutions to complex industrial problems. You will support projects and concepts across our key Business Units including Health, Public Transport, Automotive, Motorsport and our Strategic Partnerships.

The Modelling and Decision Sciences has three core capabilities:

  • Modelling – to understand the behaviour of complex systems through dynamics or data driven modelling;
  • Optimization – to make recommendations about a system and its operation;
  • Control -  enacting recommendations through either closed-loop control or human-in-the-loop decision making.

The role

Data Scientists at McLaren Applied Technologies solve problems using innovative cuting-edge techniques. Your technical expertise will help us design, develop, test, deploy and present analytical solutions to complex industrial problems. You will be exploring and visualising a complex data sets in MATLAB, Python or R; building models using the appropriate technical methods; developing algorithms to deliver insight; and collaborating with our software engineers to productise our solutions.

You will solve complex analytical problems using existing modelling and optimisation techniques in a fresh way. Whilst identifying and developing reusable components to solutions, including documentation and appropriate levels of testing of code. You will actively contribute to improve quality and processes through team activities such as project estimation, code reviews and retrospectives. Whilst liaising with project managers to update on progress and flag up project risks where appropriate.


  • BSc in mathematics, computer science, statistics, operations research, or other relevant numerate discipline
  • MSc or PhD in mathematics, operational research, or other relevant field
  • Experience in solving complex optimisation problems using tools such as MATLAB, R or Python (preferable)
  • Experience developing algorithms and productionising solutions
  • Ability to work autonomously and shape technical work
  • Ability to work in a fast moving environment, always striving for excellence

Skills and experience

  • Experience in combining modelling and data-driven techniques
  • Experience of developing models to solve problems in the supply chain, manufacturing and production

Personal attributes 

  • A problem solver, using innovative cutting-edge techniques who is passionate about technology
  • We are looking for someone who actively researches emerging industry trends and open-source technologies, and communicates them to the team
  • A keen interest in a specific area of systems modelling (e.g. discrete-event simulation) would be beneficial

The work environment

You will be based at our unique offices in the South Bank area of London. The building boasts spacious offices and meeting rooms, a gaming lounge and stunning views of London. It also hosts weekly events, classes, workshops and happy hours, encouraging the best and brightest to network and discuss the next big idea to hit the tech industry over a drink or two.
Some travel to the McLaren Technology Centre (Woking, Surrey) will be required.
