Job Description

When our founder Bruce McLaren passed away at the age of 32 he left behind a legacy that has shaped who we are today. We have an unrivalled heritage which has its roots in racing; but McLaren Automotive is now creating a story of its own and we want you to be a part of it.
As part of our Track25 business plan we will launch 18 new models or derivatives of our vehicles and look to expand our retailer network into new markets with an aim of having 100 retailers globally. Track 25 and McLaren Automotive’ s growing reputation is testament to our world class employees.

The Role

This role is as an Engineer within Advance Engineering, working in the Technology Discovery team. In this role, you’ll be focussing on the development of tools, processes and solutions that allow us to determine how future McLaren vehicles should perform. This role requires experience in the following areas:

  • Vehicle Simulation tools & processes
  • Software Programming
  • Data Analytics
  • Data Management

In the Technology Discovery team, you’ll be working with the engineering and product teams to define targets and technologies for future McLaren vehicles. You’ll develop tools to bring information into, manage and drive the target setting process. You’ll develop tools to bring engineering roadmaps together and align them with the future vehicle plan. This may involve learning new software languages & platforms, as we develop state of the art toolsets.
As part of this role, you’ll also be simulating future vehicles and using the results along with the engineering roadmaps to understand gaps in our technology forecasts, and will develop recommendations for how to fill them. You’ll be comfortable with building simulation models of new vehicle systems as required, working with the CAE and Controls teams.
As a technical specialist with strong ‘doing’ skills you’ll be responsible for contributing to AE projects related to your technical expertise in collaboration with other AE and McLaren employees. As part of the team, you’ll be expected to help your team mates with their projects with technical support or simply brainstorming ideas. You’ll be expected to expand and broaden your areas of technical competence, especially in areas we identify as being particularly relevant to our technology roadmap.

  • You’ll have an excellent first-principles understanding of your field of expertise and a broad understanding of other related fields relevant to automotive applications.
  • You’ll use this knowledge to uncover emerging technology and understand state of the art through publications, news, external contacts, etc. You’ll contact and build relationships with external partners, finding ways of collaborating with those that share our vision.
  • You’ll develop innovative solutions from initial idea through to functional prototype as quickly as possible. The process must include sense-checks of feasibility through, for example, design studies, modelling and simulation. These demonstrations can be virtual or physical.
  • Needless to say, you’ll be responsible for operating within the budget allocated and honouring commitments.

As a member of an exceptionally creative, motivated and technically strong team you will be expected to share your expertise with the team, developing their understanding and skills. In addition, it’s expected that you’ll learn from other team members in return and to contribute to developing the team’s innovation culture.

  • Very high results in an Engineering Degree.
  • Demonstrate strong first principles understanding across multiple engineering fields and have a broad skill set across design, modelling, simulation, coding/calibration and testing.
  • Demonstrate a logical and methodical approach to data analysis, taking information available from a variety of sources and forming sound conclusions based on this.
  • It would be advantageous to have some experience of delivering high tech prototypes (hardware or software) in a very small team.

Personal Attributes:

  • You’ll have experience of developing and delivering solutions, and a proven track record in using your knowledge to be fearless in your projects’ ambition without being reckless.
  • Self-reliant and self-starting
  • Good communicator and ability to form strong working relationships internal to the team, in the broader business and externally.
  • Pragmatic approach, prepared to kill an idea when necessary.
  • Enthusiastic about learning and exploring new ideas and willing to ask questions.
  • Curious about and driven to find out about emerging and developing technologies in the field of expertise and beyond.

We recognise that we can only achieve our vision with the dedication and collaboration of our world class employees. It is our aim to become the employer of choice within the global automotive industry.
At McLaren Automotive we are constantly looking to improve. To become the employer of choice we are always looking to develop our employee offerings.
