Job description/Person specification
Based in Farnborough and/or London we are looking for a an experienced Data Engineer to work in an established team of Data Analysts. The team has a portfolio of projects for Security, Defence and Commercial customers, and the team includes Data Science specialists, systems engineers and Human Science practitioners as well as software/system engineers. The team also supports projects across the whole company, that include producing solutions for leading-edge applications in Big Data, some DevOps projects, applications requiring models of complex systems and applications requiring Enterprise level integration of components. Increasingly these solutions exploit Agile development and Cloud based services.

Overall Purpose of the Job:

  • Designing and implementing solutions.
  • Integrating Open Source components into micro-services, both as prototypes and in a DevOps style.
  • Leadership of tasks within implementation projects.
  • Liaison with customer technical representatives.
  • Looking for and suggesting opportunities to further improve the products.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Accountable to the project team lead for production of good quality software components, and for adequate documentation to allow efficient team working.
  • Accountable for working with Integration and Test engineers to produce testable and tested components.
  • Accountable to the team for being creative and finding opportunities to incorporate new ideas into the products.

The fit:
The successful candidate will have substantial experience of working with data-intensive projects, and a curiosity to work in a variety of domains, with a variety of technology stacks including different programming languages (Java, Python, R, Scala, or C++). You will be knowledgeable in Open Source techniques and tooling & have experience in design, development, test and integration of quality software.

Experience of technical supervision of less experienced staff would also be an advantage.
Experience working in a customer-facing role is desirable, as the role will require some time working on customer sites. The ability to think clearly and creatively, communicate openly, collaborate, and influence a range of stakeholders are all required.

Desirable Experience of some or all of the following would be useful:

  • Experience in working in Agile or scaled Agile teams.
  • Familiarity with a DevOps environment; Experience across the full product development lifecycle from requirements to user testing.
  • Use of virtualisation and Cloud technologies; Experience of AWS and/or Azure.
  • Big Data tools include: ElasticSearch, Hadoop, Spark, Solr, Salt/Puppet/Ansible, Zookeeper, Accumulo, Kafka, MongoDB, Neo4J. Also Cassandra, Apache Storm, IBM Infosphere Streams, Oracle 11/12, ZeroMQ, OrientDB.
  • Familiarity with systems engineering design and implementation processes
  • Supervision of less experienced technical staff
