Job Description

Job Specification

Pharmaron is a premier R&D service company supporting the life sciences industry and is staffed by over 7,000 employees in North America, Europe, Japan and China.

Pharmaron acquired the Hoddesdon campus, consisting of several purpose built scientific and administrative buildings together with a purpose built conference area in February 2017. The research building has more than 5,000m2 of premier R&D space and houses an established Process Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry and Drug Discovery team. The Hoddesdon site has state-of-the-art Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standard facilities for the development of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API), formulation development and process chemistry.

The UK Drug Discovery team provides world-class drug discovery leadership to our partners in the life-science industry. As trusted collaborators, and in synergy with the unique capabilities and resources of the global Pharmaron group, our science teams aim to create small-molecule preclinical candidates of exceptional quality. Pharmaron UK is currently undergoing a period of growth and expansion with the construction of a new laboratory containing 40 fumehoods and associated office space.

As part of our continued expansion in the UK, we have an opening for an enthusiastic and experienced Computational Chemist to join our Drug Discovery team based in Hoddesdon. As the computational chemist on project teams, the candidate will creatively and proactively apply computational methods, including structure-based drug design, homology modeling, conformational analysis, docking, virtual screening, molecular dynamics, quantum methods, cheminformatics, diversity/similarity analysis and QSAR/machine learning/artificial intelligence to the analysis of project data and design of project compounds to advance multiple drug discovery projects.

Key roles and responsibilities

  • Support and drive small molecule drug discovery projects from hit-finding, through lead generation and lead optimisation to candidate selection, utilising in-house resources and jointly with Pharmaron partner organisations. Through scientific leadership and collaboration with colleagues, provide clear data analyses, actionable hypotheses and ideas to steer overall project and, in particular, medicinal and synthetic chemistry project contributions.
  • Present plans, tactics and achievements to external partners and to internal stakeholders including project and senior management.
  • Provide flexible support to the scientific and operational needs of the department; be willing to develop new skills and assume responsibility for new capabilities.

Qualification

  • A Ph.D. degree in the area of computational chemistry, or equivalent industrial experience
  • Multi-year experience in world class small molecule drug discovery organisation(s)
  • Expertise in structure- and ligand-based drug discovery
  • Understanding of physicochemical properties and DMPK and their importance in small molecule drug design
  • Knowledge of cheminformatics methods and databases
  • Experience of common scripting languages or pipelining tools
  • A record of combining the above to make meaningful contributions to drug discovery projects
  • Excellent decision making and influencing skills
  • Excellent communication, collaboration and team-working skills
