Job Description

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join a brand new squad, working on a business critical Open Access project within Elsevier’s Oxford tech hub.

Open Access publishing is a key part of Elsevier’s long-term strategy. It is therefore essential that we can provide timely and accurate data, to enable the business to make key decisions in a timely manner. This involves production of the right data and exposing this into business insights tools that can then be used for data visualisation, allowing for efficient and effective decision making.

Your role will include:

  • Working as an engineer in a small squad to support, maintain and further enhance the Open Access Metrics and Dashboards solution
  • Working directly with customers and end users
  • Writing and reviewing portions of detailed specifications for the development of system components of moderate complexity
  • Assisting with smooth running of software development and system support processes
  • Providing design input across a product
  • Designing and working with moderately complex data models

The key technologies used will be AWS Glue and Python for ETL, Snowflake and Tableau. If you have experience in these and some of the following skills then please get in touch ASAP:

  • Ability to design and work with complex data models
  • Data Engineering/ETL – Skills with relevant tools and techniques for efficient processing of large amounts of data i.e. Talend, AWS Glue, SQL, Python, Spark
  • Databases and data storage – Knowledge in use of Cloud based data storage and platforms (AWS S3 and Snowflake)
  • Data Vizualisation and Analytics – Understanding of Analytics tools and Business Intelligence, ideally Tableau
  • Expertise in data modeling, design and manipulation, optimization, best practices, tuning, and leading industry trend knowledge
  • Expertise in normalized/dimensional data modeling principles and their application to complex business needs
  • Expertise in industry technology language development trends.
  • Expertise in test-driven development and maintenance including techniques for applying best practices for overall project benefit
  • Knowledge of multiple data storage subsystems
  • Proven expertise in the use and development of applicable desktop tool sets
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Strong proficiency with data manipulation language including optimization techniques
  • Ability to design and work with moderately complex data models
  • Expertise in development languages including but not limited to: Java/J2EE, JavaScript, JSP, C/C++, HTML, XML, SQL, Windows, UNIX, and .Net
  • Knowledge in using and developing applicable tool sets
