Job Description

An exciting opportunity has arisen within Elsevier Research Technology for a Full-stack Software Engineer with 3 to 4 years Java, Javascript and Python programming experience to join the Submission Systems department.

The Submissions Systems department is responsible for supporting authors in the submission of their work and editors in assessing the suitability of the submissions for publication via the peer review process. You will work in a squad of people comprising of software engineers, quality engineers and a UX specialist undertaking proof of concepts, pilots and production implementation and support using an Agile approach. You will use Agile practices and procedures and work closely with the product owner to ensure business priorities and requirements are understood.

This is a great opportunity to join a team working at the heart of what we do as an organisation, to develop deeper core skills, but also to gain experience in other technologies such as AWS and cloud, Groovy, Scala and Kotlin.

If you have some of the following experience we would love to hear from you:

  • Knowledge / experience of acceptance-test driven development, behavior-driven development, unit testing and mocking.
  • Proficiency in Java, Python and Javascript. Full-stack Java experience is essential.
  • Knowledge of AWS, Groovy, Scala or Kotlin desirable but can be learnt if these are new to you.
  • Familiarity with a modern IDE, such as IntelliJ IDEA, and proficiency in using automated refactoring tools.
  • Understanding of the value pair programming, continuous integration, and other XP practices can bring to software development
  • Knowledge and understanding of the use Agile in Software development
  • Understanding of data modelling principles
  • Ability to work in a diverse and inclusive environment
