Full time Data Science Machine Learning Data Analytics Big Data Data Management Statistics

Job Description

Why join the CDAO Data Science Team as a Machine Learning Engineer?

You’ll get to work on a wide range of interesting projects, across domains with no shortage of interesting challenges! We take ideas from the concept stage through to production and work with our customers to understand how Data Science and Machine Learning can be applied to deliver solutions to a myriad of problems.

You will play a pivotal role in productionising these solutions into robust data products, supporting us in realising our digital and data potential and creating the Bank of the Future.

You'll help rapidly transform our capabilities and be a key player in our further digitisation using latest emerging technologies and services.

What will I do as a Machine Learning Engineer within the Chief Data and Analytics Office?

You will develop Machine Learning systems in Python alongside our Data Engineers and Data Scientists. Bringing your software and engineering expertise to help productionise data driven solutions and drive real business value.

You will identify and develop reusable libraries and tools with a view to making the implementation of Data Science projects at LBG faster, safer and more consistent.

You will work on projects that span the full reach of LBG giving you the opportunity to have a material impact on the lives of up to 30m+ customers across the whole of the UK – together we’ll make it possible…

Are you who we're looking for?

We're keen to speak with experienced Software Engineers with a strong interest in data, those already working as Machine Learning Engineers or Data Scientists with a strong preference for and experience with writing production code. We ask that you have at least 4 years of industry experience across the full software development lifecycle from experiment / proof of concept through to production.

You consider yourself a Pythonista and have experience in writing production level, idiomatic Python to deliver business value. You are an evangelist for software best practices, spaghetti code makes your heart sink and you have a good handle on Python testing frameworks, CI/CD and source control. Further you are not afraid to share your knowledge with others, offering technical leadership and support as needed. Some familiarity with the scientific stack, specifically Pandas and NumPy is desirable, as is some exposure to SQLAlchemy although you don’t need to be an expert.

Additionally we are particularly interested in talking to engineers who have experience with other languages in addition to Python (Haskell, Rust, Scala), have familiarity with GCP and have experience in using data pipeline orchestration and workflow management tools.

This role is not for you if you would prefer to spend most of your time iterating on a business problem with stakeholders, experimenting with different statistical modelling and machine learning techniques or reading research papers.

This would be a great role if:

  • You are a Python engineer with a track record for delivering industry-level production software.
  • You’re more interested in building production ML systems than experimenting with different modelling techniques.
  • You have an automation mind-set.
  • You are customer focused and want to continuously improve our systems.

And how will we challenge you?

You'll have the opportunity to work across multiple projects to understand and work complex problems through to production solutions. We are really lucky to have a continuous and interesting supply of work, lots of different problems to solve and a continually evolving infrastructure.

You will get exposure to a host of wider technologies and will be given opportunities to stretch yourself, share your knowledge and coach and develop others

Finally you will work with some of the best Data Scientists and Data Engineers in the organisation as we look to build a thriving data driven community.

What you'd get in return:
We'll provide you with a diverse, energising and informal environment that focuses on equal opportunity and real career progression.
We'll take your personal and professional development very seriously and enable you to make a difference to millions throughout your career with us.

As a team we promote flexible working and have committed to accommodate three days of home working on an ongoing basis.

Together we’ll make it possible…

You'll also receive a benefits package which includes:

  • A performance related award
  • Generous pension contribution
  • 30 days leave plus bank holidays
  • A flexible cash pot (4% of base salary) to spend on benefits
