Job Description

Illumina are the global leaders in the development and application of next generation DNA sequencing technology, with 90% of the world’s next generation sequencing data created on Illumina’s platforms. Illumina End-to-End Software Solutions (E2E) is one of the most applied of Illumina’s technology areas, developing products and solutions directly targeting human health and clinical applications. The Illumina E2E software team in Cambridge is actively seeking a software test engineer to support the ongoing development of their products.

The team develops sophisticated diagnostic software that processes large genetic data sets from our sequencers to provide clinical reports to physicians and patients. Our primary focus is to ensure that customers can utilise our technology quickly and accurately. We also support early-stage development activities for future product ranges. Illumina E2E products are at the forefront of helping to improve human health, so the team is staffed with people who share a passion for solving hard problems while learning about new technologies and their applications.

Why You

The successful candidate will join a growing and highly motivated team of Software Developers, Test Engineers, Bioinformaticians and Algorithm Designers in the Illumina End-to-End Solutions (E2E) team at our state-of-the-art facility, just south of Cambridge.

There is no need for you to have a background in clinical or genomic software. When you join us, you will be given time to build the foundations of your knowledge in this exciting growth area. In fact, most of our current software team have gone through this same journey with guidance from our team of experienced scientists and bioinformaticians.

The role

Working with the rest of the product development team, you will work on testing products throughout the software development lifecycle. We typically follow agile methodology when developing new products so you will usually start working in our requirements management tool to review software requirements. From this you will write and review software test cases, implement automated tests using a test framework and review other test engineers’ automated tests. You will also spend time verifying bug-fixes and perform formal verification, capturing evidence and writing verification reports. The role can also include contributing to the risk management process for these clinical products.

In addition to software testing, you will also learn about

  • Our current cutting-edge medical device products
  • The clinical domain we work in
  • Illumina’s approach to software development in an Agile environment
  • Medical device development – process, procedures, risk management, and international standards

Requirements/qualifications

  • Some experience of programming in Python, or another programming/scripting language
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Discipline to embark on the learning curve to master the technologies underpinning our products
  • Attention to detail
  • You will have recently completed a technical degree ideally in Maths, Computer science, Physics or Engineering, Biology or other scientific disciplines with some programming/scripting modules

What can you expect

Remote working

This role is primarily based out of Illumina’s European headquarters, just outside of Cambridge, UK. Partial remote working may be possible, but some office-based work is likely to be required.
