Location: Cambridge (UK), Gaithersburg (US) or Gothenburg (Sweden)

We are looking for a Senior Director, Biometrics Team Leader to join our growing Early stage portfolio in the Cardiovascular, Renal and Metabolism (CVRM) therapeutic area. If you have extensive experience in the pharmaceutical industry and the desire to lead a team of statisticians delivering early stage development programs and clinical trial designs as well as supporting strategic governance and regulatory interactions, we want to hear from you!

You will be a part of the Early Biometrics & Statistical Innovation (EB&SI) department, where our data-centric focus helps us work efficiently and creatively to bring the right medicines to the right patients. Our teams use their expertise in statistics and programming to address drug development objectives and reduce uncertainty in product development, driving better business decisions with quantitative reasoning. As part of Data Science & AI, you’ll use technology at the forefront of science in a creative environment, with the scope to develop new statistical ideas and apply them in your work.

What you will do:


As a Senior Director, Biometrics Team Leader, you will line manage and develop a team of statisticians. You will be expected to:

  • Globally lead, manage, and develop a group of Statisticians
  • Provide mentoring to more junior staff and present at internal training seminars
  • Lead Biometrics resource allocation to deliver projects and provide input into decisions about internal versus outsourcing delivery
  • Provide leadership and direction to improvement projects/activities/initiatives
  • Drive the development of new procedures and standards to increase quality, efficiency, and effectiveness
  • Take a leadership role, contribute to strategic planning and quantitative decision making, and ensure biometrics contributions to drug projects are successfully delivered in adherence to AZ standards and external regulations
  • Participate in adapting and developing statistical methodology for early clinical development
  • Develop and maintain contacts with global opinion leaders, consultants, and collaborative groups

Essential in this role:

  • The minimum required education is a M.Sc./PhD degree in a relevant discipline such as statistics, biostatistics, or mathematical statistics, with exemplary technical skills
  • In depth knowledge of technical and regulatory requirements with experience in pharmaceutical development, health care, or other relevant areas
  • Excellent communication and influencing skills
  • A track record of independent leadership and initiative
  • Managerial experience
  • Excellent collaboration skills, along with the energy and ability to work across global and functional boundaries both internally and externally
  • Forward thinking awareness of the pharmaceutical landscape
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally
