Capita is looking for talented, innovative and creative people to join our Data Science team to work on a number of exciting new technology initiatives like Chatbots, Blockchain, Knowledge Mining, and Artificial Intelligence.

*This role will be associated with a local office hub location but requirement will be to work from home for the most part and have flexibility to travel on occasion to client sites*

Job Description:

We’re supporting our clients as they adapt to a new world in the wake of COVID-19. We’re now recruiting for roles which will help our clients to deliver vital services and to resume business wherever possible.

What you’ll be doing :

As a Senior Data Scientist , you will work with other Data Scientists, Data Engineers, A.I. Experts, Technical Architects and Project Managers on interdisciplinary projects using Machine Learning and Natural Language Processing to derive structure and insight from raw data across various industry sectors. Using cutting edge analysis techniques, you will influence many of the recommendations our clients need to positively change their businesses and enhance performance

  • work closely with your business to identify issues and use data to propose solutions for effective decision making
  • build algorithms and design experiments to merge, manage, interrogate and extract data to supply tailored reports to colleagues, customers or the wider organisation
  • use machine learning tools and statistical techniques to produce solutions to problems
  • test data mining models to select the most appropriate ones for use on a project
  • maintain clear and coherent communication, both verbal and written, to understand data needs and report results
  • create clear reports that tell compelling stories about how customers or clients work with the business with modern data visualisation techniques
  • assess the effectiveness of data sources and data-gathering techniques and improve data collection methods
  • horizon scan to stay up to date with the latest technology, techniques and methods
  • conduct research from which you'll develop prototypes and proof of concepts
  • look for opportunities to use insights/datasets/code/models across other functions in the organisation (for example in the HR and marketing departments)
  • stay curious and enthusiastic about using algorithms to solve problems and enthuse others to see the benefit of your work
  • use Agile DevOps and appropriate CI/CD processes
  • communicate ideas and insights effectively to other Data Scientists, Data Engineers, Product Owners and clients.
  • recruit, train and lead a team of data scientists
  • have influence in the formulation on the Capita data science strategy
  • be involved in new systems and processes and look for opportunities to improve the flow of data
  • apply new and emerging technologies in conjunction with our Director of Artificial Intelligence

What we’re looking for:

  • Degree educated in any of the following subjects (computer science, data science/computer and data science, engineering, mathematics, mathematics and operational research, physics, statistics). Other STEM subjects considered. MSc desirable and PhD strongly recommended
  • Excellent proven programming skills in Python and experience with querying data from a multitude of different data sources. Experience with SQL and SPARK is required
  • Excellent practical understanding of Machine Learning techniques and algorithms. Strong interest in AI
  • Five or more years’ experience of applying algorithms to solve problems using ML and AI as well as experience around process automation possibly gained in commercial environments
  • Good interest of Cloud Computing (exposure to Azure environment would be beneficial)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex analytical concepts to people from outside the field.
  • Broad practical awareness of software development methodologies and best practices. Experience of Agile DevOps is a must.
  • Ability to deliver high-quality work under pressure in a fast-paced Agile environment.
  • Experience / desire to mentor other Data Scientists.
