We’re looking for a Data Analyst to support the work of the West Midlands Water, Land and Biodiversity (WLB) Leadership Team. By working collaboratively across our WLB teams, this role helps ensure delivery on the ground is aligned with our strategic aims and offers an insight into the full range of our work. We’re looking for a Data Analyst to support the work of the West Midlands Water, Land and Biodiversity (WLB) Leadership Team. By working collaboratively across our WLB teams, this role helps ensure delivery on the ground is aligned with our strategic aims and offers an insight into the full range of our work. The role’s activities will include:
- Pull together new and existing data sets, exploratory analysis which includes understanding evidence gaps and uncertainty, and presentation of business intelligence data to varied group of internal and occasionally external stakeholders.
- Supporting the West Midlands Area WLB Delivery Group and Business Board to join up multiple programmes, and ensure we are delivering against our priorities.
- Using data visualisation and other skills to help the Leadership Team communicate Area priorities and tell the story of WLB achievements.
- Automate reporting of work flows which allows us to report and communicate business metrics in a timely way, while reducing workload for teams.
The team
Reporting to the WLB People and Programme Manager, this technical role will support the WLB Leadership team and work collaboratively with other data specialists across the Area. Our staff monitor the environment, regulate activities, manage incidents like drought, work with partners and plan. Together we create a cleaner, healthier environment and a nation better protected against hazards. Our work is more important than ever against the backdrop of the climate and nature emergencies.
Experience/skills required
- Preference, but not essential, for degree standard or equivalent in a relevant discipline.
- Proven data and information management expertise. Particularly in data science, business intelligence or data integration.
- Application of data analysis in an environmental context.
- Geographic Information System (GIS) skills and experience.
- Familiarity with one or more of the following: Python, R, FME, Power BI, QLIK, Tableau, SQL, ArcGIS Online, Sharepoint Online.
- Ability to think strategically using broad suite of data in an integrated way.
- Ability to explore user needs and make recommendations on data collection and interpretation to support evidence led decision making.
- We want somebody able to see gaps and opportunities in evidence and data
- Ability to present data using different approaches best suited to the audience

The vacancy is permanent and based at any of our West Midland offices although a mixture of home working can be considered as long as business needs are met. Some travel to other offices may be required as part of the role. You will be encouraged to take on an incident response role.

You will act as a part of a team engaging widely across the business to transform our asset portfolio (primarily Flood and Coastal Risk) performance data into; business, commercial and programme business information. While providing specific analyst capabilities for the team you may also need to give general support across all aspects of the team’s work, as the need arises.
