About the role

The School of Engineering at the University of Leicester is seeking to strengthen and complement its research in manufacturing. We have several new research posts in Machine Learning for Materials and Manufacturing and it is an exciting opportunity to work right at the interface between a University and a large manufacturing industry. You will aid in the leadership of the development of a joint NISCO UK Research Centre being established by the University of Leicester and NISCO. This is a progressive and exciting development which represents a strategic investment by NISCO and University of Leicester. The Centre will develop and execute a dynamic funded research programme in the fields of digital manufacturing. NISCO is a joint venture of Hong Kong listed company Fosun International and Nanjing Iron and Steel Group.

NISCO involves the manufacturing and sales of steels and new materials. NISCO is the 3rd largest steel plate manufacturer in the world and in 2016 NISCO achieved an operating income of about 60 billion GBP.

You will travel across the UK, Europe and internationally to develop and deliver research programmes. You will undertake individual and collaborative research of the highest quality, attaining an international research profile. You will identify and exploit new and profitable opportunities for business growth as well as developing colleagues in their area of expertise.

Working with the Centre Directors, you will assist in developing the strategic plan and in setting research targets and their implementation. You will manage the activities as well as leading on the development of excellent relationships with key funding partners.

About you

With a PhD in Mathematics, Physics, Engineering or equivalent you will be able to demonstrate expertise and outstanding research achievement/potential in machine leaning. Expertise in data science, materials and process modelling, industrial process simulation, data-driven modelling is key, alongside an ability to generate external funding (through research grants, contracts and other sources) to support research programmes.
