Job Description

Full Job Description

The Commercial Analysis team within Food Data Science would like to recruit a Lead Statistician to help drive the transformation of the supply chain of the M&S Food business.

The Role

Technical lead working on the transformation of our end-to-end supply chain. Supply chain is the backbone of our food business, from how we order products from suppliers all the way through to how we serve stores. Analysing and optimising product flow through networks is necessarily mathematical and statistical. You will:

  • Work as part of a team to deliver clear, actionable insights to supply chain colleagues based on solid statistical foundations and empirical evidence
  • Work as part of a team to produce well-founded statistical models that can serve as starting points for statistical machine learning models developed by the Technology and Modelling team within Food Data Science
  • Play a central role in developing and maintaining high levels of statistical skill within the team

Candidates for this lead-level role will need to exhibit technical, organisational and leadership skills in depth.

The Team

You will work within the Commercial Analysis team of Food Data Science. This team combines commercial acumen and statistical skill to drive transformation across Marks and Spencer’s award-winning food business. The Commercial Analysis team is also responsible for designing and running trials across the food business to evaluate the effects of commercial transformation.

You would also work closely with:

  • The Technology and Modelling team within Food Data Science. This team is responsible for designing and building statistical machine learning models that run at scale and capture the complexities of our food business
  • The Project Management team of Food Supply Chain. This team is responsible for the optimisation of the supply chain, including culture change and ways-of-working

Skills & Experience

Technical requirements

  • PhD (or strong MSc) in Statistics, Econometrics, Operational Research or similar
  • In-depth knowledge of techniques relevant to modelling flow of products through a network, such as time-series modelling, state-space models, hidden Markov models, stochastic process models, dynamic programming
  • Hypothesis formation and hypothesis testing for structured conditional models as well as simpler models
  • Knowledge of analytical and numerical optimisation techniques
  • A solid foundation of mathematical skills including linear algebra and calculus
  • Ability to communicate statistical concepts and findings technically to team members and generally to non-specialists
  • Experience of, and enthusiasm for, programming statistical models using appropriate libraries

Organisational skills

  • Experience of, and enthusiasm for, collaborative working within a multi-disciplinary team
  • Comfortable managing time to prioritise the activities that add the most value
  • Adherence to externally agreed timelines
  • Enthusiasm for using statistical methods to drive commercial transformation

Leadership skills

  • Assume a technical leadership role in statistical techniques and practice across the Food Data Science team
  • Act as a centre of excellence in Statistics for Supply Chain
  • Lead by example in continuous development of professional skills
  • Develop a professional network and bring it to bear for the benefit of Supply Chain and the Food Data Science team
  • Enthusiasm and determination

Ideal requirements

  • Experience with Python (or Scala) and SQL in a big data environment
  • Understanding of supply chain theory and practice
  • Experience leading a team
