Data Engineer

Due to rapid industry growth a new Data Engineer position has become available within the Semiconductor Service Division at Edwards. Edwards is a market leader in the growing Semiconductor sector, and forms part of the Vacuum Technique Area of the Atlas Copco Group. This key role will work as part of the digital team, who provide digital solutions to the Semiconductor business divisions. One of the key delivery tracks of the team is data analytics with a primary responsibility to ensure that the data required to feed analytics is available, of the appropriate quality, and requires the minimum of manual processing.

The Data Engineer will work with Information Systems teams, DevOps teams, particularly in respect of big data and analytics infrastructure, Semiconductor Division business colleagues and team members, and will be involved in the wider Digital Transformation.

This is a great opportunity to join Edwards in a very supportive team, reporting into the Digitalization Manager, Semiconductor Divisions. This role is flexible and can be based from the Vacuum Technique head office in Burgess Hill, UK, or from our European locations (Czech Republic, Italy, France, Germany) or homebased. There may be some travel between Edwards and customer sites.

The Mission

The Mission of the Data Engineer is to expand and optimize our data and data pipeline architecture, as well as optimizing the data flow, data quality and data collection for cross functional teams. You will support our developers, data analysts, data scientists and Information Systems (IS) data team on data initiatives that will enable optimal data delivery architecture and common data that will be consistent for all business divisions.

Main Responsibilities and Scope

  • Create, test monitor, and maintain data pipelines from multiple applications to the Azure Data Factory
  • Identify, design, and implement internal process improvements: automating manual processes, optimizing data delivery and re-designing infrastructure for greater scalability
  • Work with IS team to ensure our infrastructure meets the requirements for optimal extraction, transformation and loading of data from a wide variety of sources.
  • Work with stakeholders, data analysts and data science teams to assist with data related issues and support their data infrastructure needs
  • Create data tools for analytics and data scientist team members that assist them in providing greater insight and functionality from our data
  • Seek opportunities to automate routine or manual tasks, using scripting languages, software frameworks and libraries to move, translate and store data.
  • Use analysis tools to explore the data, link data from diverse sources, and provide context that helps the understanding of others.
  • Working with our business analysts, solution architects and data analysts on the development of analytics and predictive models, providing feedback within the team, and presenting results and insight as part of the wider Digital Transformation project.
  • Collaborate with IS and other DevOps teams, particularly in respect of big data and analytics infrastructure, and the development of production systems for ingesting and cataloguing data.
  • Education and experience
  • Good working SQL knowledge and experience working with relational databases, query authoring (SQL) as well as working familiarity with a variety of databases
  • Experience building and optimising data pipelines, architectures, and data sets
    • Experience with data pipeline and workflow management tools
    • Experience with big data tools: Hadoop, Spark, Kafka, etc.
    • Experience with relational SQl and NoSQL databases
    • Experience with object-oriented/object function scripting languages: Python, Java, C++, Scala, etc.
    • Experience with Azure Data Factory
  • Experience of performing root cause analysis on data and processes to answer specific business questions and identify improvement opportunities
  • Build processes supporting data transformation, data structures, metadata, dependancy and workload management
  • Good project management and organizational skills
  • Experience supporting and working with cross-functional teams in a dynamic enviroment
  • Expert with Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel. Familiarity with Microsoft PowerBI would be an advantage.
  • Excellent spoken and written English; other Asian or European languages may be an advantage.
  • Basic knowledge of Machine Learning and SAP Experience would be beneficial
